Internet music listening has really taken shape, especially with the .mp3 craze changing FM radio into the exception rather than the rule. Two sites which I strongly recommend for free & legal audio are Pandora and Songza.
gives you the ability to create ‘radio stations’ that play your favorite artists. In addition to providing quality ‘deep cuts’ from your top bands, it sporadically inserts artists with similar musical qualities for you to consider. The site constantly responds and evolves to your tastes, so rest assured: you won’t have to worry about ‘Eminem’ making any appearances in your ‘Tom Petty’ station. It’s a great way to expand your music base while listening to songs that you already know and love.
is a nice site when you aren’t necessarily in the mood to explore new artists or spend time building stations. Just enter the artist or song name, search, and enjoy! The database is very expansive, and I have yet to stump it on a particular artist or song. The only issue with Songza can be quality because, much like YouTube, not everything your search brings up is ideal content.
Internet innovations like these satisfy a growing need for a wide variety of customizable new media that’s easy to access: can traditional radio keep up? What will happen when we can access sites like Songza and Pandora in our cars or on the go?
